Reality Is Constructed

Media language in survival television

Constructed does not mean fake. The act was real — the edit decides what it means.

The toolkit

  • Camera — self-shot footage as an authenticity code
  • Editing — cross-cutting builds rivalry that may not have happened
  • Sound — music tells you whom to condemn or admire
  • Graphics — 'Day 50' counters borrow documentary credibility
  • Mise-en-scène — bodily decline as proof of hardship

How to use a technique

  • Name the technique
  • State its effect on the audience
  • Explain its genre significance

“There is a close-up” earns nothing. “The extreme close-up on cracked hands is visual proof of authentic hardship” earns marks.

Sound does moral work the image cannot.

Ominous cue + reaction shot = 'villain'

Discuss

If editing can make the same act heroic or selfish, can we ever fairly judge a contestant?
