The Three Strands

Three ways to understand a genre

AS 91251 rewards understanding of one aspect of a genre. The recognised aspects are change, audience, and commercial considerations. These are the spine of the whole unit.

Change

How and why has the genre evolved? Conventions, hybridisation, and the causes of change.

Audience

What do viewers expect, why, and how do they respond? (Remember: audience ≠ society.)

Commercial

How do money, platforms and risk shape the genre? Controlled innovation, not just "profit".

They're connected

These strands aren't separate essays — they interlock. A change in convention (text) happens because of an audience demand and a commercial pressure. Strong answers move between the corners of the triangle rather than staying in one.
